Dental Correctors: Types of Braces
Metal
Metal braces are the most common and have evolved significantly in recent years. Today, these dental correctors are more comfortable and effective than ever. They are made from high-quality stainless steel, ensuring strength and durability to correct dental alignment issues effectively.
Elastics (Rubber Bands)
The use of orthodontic elastics helps improve the bite between the upper and lower teeth, promoting proper tooth alignment. It is crucial to follow the orthodontist’s instructions to ensure the rubber bands work as efficiently as possible. When used correctly, they will help speed up and optimize treatment.
Extraoral Traction
Extraoral traction is used to correct issues such as overbite (when the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth) or prognathism (when the lower teeth protrude beyond the upper teeth). This device works like a “brake” that applies gentle pressure to prevent the teeth and upper jaw from continuing to move forward, helping to restore proper dental alignment.
Positioners
Positioners are used at the end of orthodontic treatment to make the final adjustments to the teeth. If the patient cooperates fully, this appliance will be used for a short period of 4 to 8 weeks, helping to achieve optimal final alignment.
Separators (Spacers)
Orthodontic separators are small rubber rings placed between the teeth to create space and facilitate the placement of orthodontic bands at subsequent visits. While using them, it is important to avoid sticky foods and the use of toothpicks or dental floss, as these may dislodge the separators.
Ceramic
Ceramic braces are made from a transparent material similar to the color of the tooth, making them less visible than metal braces. This feature makes them an ideal option for those looking for a more aesthetic and discreet alternative, especially among teenagers and adults.
Retainers
Retainers are key devices for keeping teeth in their new positions once orthodontic treatment is complete. They can be fixed or removable. Your orthodontist will tell you how to care for them and how long you should wear them. Proper use of the retainer is crucial to prevent teeth from shifting back to their original position.
Instructions for using and caring for your retainer:
Consistent use: Wear your retainer at all times unless your orthodontist advises otherwise.
When eating: Remove it before eating and store it in its case to prevent loss.
Daily cleaning: Wash the retainer with a toothbrush and toothpaste using lukewarm (not hot) water. This will remove plaque and prevent bad odors.
Avoid loss: Always keep the retainer in its case, especially in public places or restaurants.
Difficulty speaking: At first, you may have difficulty speaking; practice reading aloud or singing to get used to it more quickly.
Retainer care: Handle it gently to avoid breaking it. If it is lost or damaged, contact us immediately.
Regular visits: Always bring your retainer to your orthodontic appointments.
Long-term care: With proper care, the retainer can last for years. Avoid hot water, extreme temperatures, or machines such as the washing machine.
